Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

MEM27005 - Tune diesel engines

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Perform tune up

  1. Determine firing pressures and adjust to specification, as applicable
  2. Perform air restriction, boost, back pressure and flow tests according to manufacturer recommendations using applicable test equipment
  3. Record readings and determine variances from specifications
  4. Determine density of exhaust smoke
  5. Adjust valve clearance and/or timing to specifications
  6. Adjust injection pump or injector timing to specification
  7. Adjust engine parameters using methods appropriate to technology of engine
  8. Determine if injector opening pressure is within specification and adjust, arrange replacement or repair if faulty

Required Skills and Knowledge
Range Statement

This field allows for different work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included.

Engine firing pressure control adjustment methods include the following:

reflashing of electronic control module (ECM) unit where electronic control is used

manual adjustment of:

governor rack travel

torque spring load limit

over speed trips

aneroid or fuel ratio control to specification
